BURSARIES

New Writing South seeks particularly to support writers who face barriers to pursuing their writing careers. This includes writers who are from under-represented communities, isolated, unemployed, have a longterm illness or disability, or who are otherwise struggling to meet the cost of attending writing activities or courses.

Our bursary programme can help in the following ways:

EVENTS

We reserve a number of free or discounted tickets for most of our events for writers meeting one of the above criteria.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Every New Writing South workshop or short course offers free or discounted places. These can be requested by contacting us. You will be asked to fill in a short form and then we will let you know whether we are able to offer you a free or discounted place.

TLC FREE READS

New Writing South is proud to be a partner in The Literary Consultancy’s Free Reads Scheme. Free reads are available for low-income writers resident in England, writing in English, who would not be able to afford TLC’s commercial fees, and prioritises those from marginalised backgrounds (BAME, disabled, LGBTQ and other under-represented groups).

TLC Free Reads is currently closed to applications. We are currently reading applications made to us in the 2021 application window, and will respond to applicants soon. Application dates for 2022 will be announced later in the year.

WRITERS SUPPORTING WRITERS

We are trialling a Pay-It-Forward scheme, where writers who can afford to give a little back can donate extra when paying for our services in order to help fund free places for others. This could include 1-1 writers’ surgeries, mentoring or other writer development activities. We will advertise these opportunities as and when we have received donations sufficient to cover their cost.
