Show or hide

The New Buds Award is a bursary scheme that aims to enable writers to apply for small development grant of up to £1000. Applications are closed for The New Buds Award 2015.

This year the award is focused on fiction and short stories. Applications are particularly welcomed from writers at early and crucial times in their career - when a small award may open opportunities that could make a huge difference.

NWS invites writers living, originating from or working in the south east region* to apply for small grants of up to £1000. The awards aim to support emerging and talented creative writers and encourage excellence new writing. The focus will be to help writers to move towards professional production of their work.

Last year New Buds was sponsored by ALCS and open to all creative writers working in radio, television, film and new media.

The New Bud bursaries may cover: professional training (but not formal education), mentoring fees, travel costs for attending a course, research or other valid and viable means of support that will enable the writer applying to write and fulfill their own aims.

The awards are about recognising talent, which ties into our key role in identifying new talent at an early stage and are aimed at helping emerging writers at early and/or crucial times in their career to apply for grants below the Arts Council’s Grants for the arts threshold.

The awards will also help us build new ongoing working relationships with creative writers in the region and provide the opportunity to make a difference to their development and work.

Download the information sheet and application form below for more details on how to apply. Please contact if you have any further queries.

* The south east region covers: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex.
