Join leading TV screenwriter and award-winning playwright, Suhayla El-Bushra for a special masterclass on writing dramatically for the small screen.

Suhayla will guide you through the principles of writing TV drama so you can confidently approach writing your own treatment and pilot episode. Explore how you pitch your writing to engage the audience you want to reach as she takes you through the process, from developing an initial idea to writing a great pilot script. Using examples from her own work and from other writers in the field, she’ll enable you to consider what makes really good TV writing, and pitfalls to avoid along the way. Come prepared to take part in practical writing exercises to help you develop strategies and tips for elevating your writing on the page.

About the tutor

Suhayla El-Bushra writes for stage and screen and is currently lead writer/exec producer on Ackley Bridge (The Forge/C4). Films include the BFI funded feature BRIDES, and BUSH, a short film for Film 4. She has various film and TV ideas in development and was selected for BAFTA’s Elevate scheme in 2018. Suhayla was writer in residence at the National Theatre where her adaptation of Nikolai Erdman’s The Suicide was staged in the Lyttelton Theatre. Other plays include The Long Song at Chichester Festival Theatre, NW Trilogy at the Kiln, Arabian Nights at The Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, Cuckoo at The Unicorn Theatre and Pigeons at The Royal Court.
