Cabaret on a Sinking Ship
(a workshop production)

A new provocative and satirical cabaret-style play opens at Brighton’s Nightingale Theatre between 26th September and 4th October 2009, during the Labour Party Conference.
In the cast are: Catherine Cusack, Richard Attlee, Amy Noble, Kate Dyson and George Williams. Director is BAFTA award-winning Vincent O’Connell. Musical Director is Edana Minghella.
Seven award-winning and new writers along with composer and jazz singer Edana Minghella have come together for the first time to collaborate on this piece, under the guidance of O’Connell.
“We have devised an innovative way of working with each other as writers, which in turn has created an innovative work” says Vincent O’Connell, Director. “It is both a serious piece of theatre, and a scathingly satirical entertainment”.
Cabaret on a Sinking Ship uses a rousing blend of politics, satire, song, sex and laughter to capture the spirit of the ‘naughty noughties’, much in the same way cabaret artists of the 1930’s responded to their broken society. Part cabaret, part musical theatre, part straight theatre, Cabaret on a Sinking Ship entertainingly explores the darkness behind the cabaret glitter.
The opening of the play coincides with and celebrates a ten-year partnership between New Writing South and the Nightingale Theatre that has nurtured new dramatists and given birth to dozens of new plays.
