SOLENT PEOPLES THEATRE

Solent Peoples Theatre was formed in 1976. For over 25 years the company has served the people of the Solent region of Hampshire with a mix of high quality touring theatre and particpatory work.

Following a comprehensive strategic review the company rellocated from Southampton to Portsmouth in September 2003.

Solent Peoples Theatre exists to create, through the use of theatre (and related participatory activities), opportunities for the peoples of the greater Solent region to engage with issues that are significant in their lives. The Company believes that it is the duty of a ‘Peoples’ theatre to challenge the passivity and alienation which characterise many contemporary cultural activities. they aim to do this by both exploiting the aesthetic possibilities of the live moment and combining the twin purposes of education and entertainment in order to effect meaningful cultural interventions in the lives of those it reaches.

Their performance events are not only created in and for communities, they are also a means of forging community through cultural action. Solent Peoples Theatre is an agent for improving the quality of life of Solent peoples, encouraging a transformation from passive consumers to active citizens.
