CHALKFOOT THEATRE ARTS
1. Commissioning Process
Where funding is available, Chalkfoot will invite writers to submit a brief outline for a play with perhaps one scene written in draft form. Chalkfoot then invite the successful writer to submit a treatment, following which they will arrange rehearsed readings/workshops to support the play's development. Chalkfoot are open to ideas from playwrights and do not restrict their work to specifically rural, or local historical, themes. From time to time they will, however, suggest an overall theme which can act as a stimulus for the development of ideas. All writers should understand that the work produced has to be suitable for presentation to a community audience in a village centre.
2. Commissioning Policy
Through community touring initiatives Chalkfoot aims to bring live theatre to people who live in rural areas, where access to arts opportunities is limited. The company normally undertakes two rural tours a year - one for adult audiences and one for family audiences (this is often an outdoor production). New writing and the creation of innovative work is central to Chalkfoot's artistic development as an organisation: virtually all their work is new, being either commissioned, company devised or company adaptations of existing stories or plays. Although funding is extremely tight, Chalkfoot do commission outside writers whenever additional funding makes this possible.
3.Submission Protocol
Writers who wish to work with the company should submit their CVs to the Artistic Director, Philip Dart. A brief synopsis of an existing play can also be usefully sent. Writers with an existing play they would like produced should first write or e-mail a brief synopsis together with a C.V. to Chalkfoot Theatre Arts
