Writing Awards and Competitions

Bridport Prize
Annual international writing competition for poetry and short stories. One of the top prizes of its kind in terms of both prestige and prize money, it has been the first step in the careers of many established poets and novelists. The prize money totals £14,000 with a first prize of £5000 for both poetry and short stories.

Cardiff International Poetry Competition 2006
The Academi, the Welsh National Literature Promotion Agency and Society for Authors, runs the Competition, and offers a First Prize of £5000

Cinnamon Press Short Story Competition
For unpublished fiction writers only. 

Chapter One Promotions International Short Story Competition
Prizes: up to £2,500 plus publication for the top three winners, ten runners up and five highly recommendedstories

Costa (formerly the Whitbread) Book Awards
The Awards has five categories – First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book.  They select one book from these five as overall Costa Book of the Year. 

Fish International Short Story Prize
One of the largest international short story competitions. First Prize - €2,500. Has been running since 1994 They also run poetry, crime, and historical fiction competitions

Guild of Food Writers Awards
Numerous awards presented annually in recognition of outstanding achievement. The awards remain the only awards judged entirely by professional food writers, journalists and editors..

International Playwriting Festival
Warehouse Theatre, Croydon. Established in 1985, the festival aims to discover, nurture and promote new theatre writing talent. The competition is for full-length unperformed plays and is judged by a panel of theatre professionals. International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

Largest and most international prize of its kind involving libraries from all corners of the globe, open to books written in any language.

Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards
Awards recognise publications about film, television and photography.

The Man Booker Prize
One of the world’s most prestigious awards, now in its thirty-eighth year. The prize aims to reward the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.

Plough Poetry Prize
An annual poetry competition run by The Plough Arts Centre in Devon.

Raymond Carver Short Story Award

Write a Story for Children Competition
Twenty Second Annual Competition open to all amateur writers. Prizes of £2,000 for the best story submitted.

Writer’s Digest Short Poetry Competition
U.S. Contest, open worldwide, for poems of up to 32 lines.    Prizes: up to $500.

Writer’s Digest Short Short Story Competition
U.S. Contest, open worldwide, for stories of up to 1,500 words.  Prizes up to $3,000. 

Writers’ Forum Short Story Competition
Prizes up to £300, with an annual £1,000 for best story of the year. The competition is open to all nationalities but entries must be in English. Deadline is 5th of every month.

Writers’ Forum Poetry Prize
First prize of £100 and three runner-up prizes monthly. Closing date: 15th of every month
